  • Re:mise's Closing and the Culling of Berlin Nightlife

This week is the Re:mise Closing Weekend and you can't say it's not going out with a bang. Running from Thursday to Monday (Nov 16-20), they've got a back-to-back program of booming club nights, including Body Language, a queer party you can find high on my picks for the weekend. While it's sure to be a hell of a farewell, and an opportunity to salute the nights of joy that Re:mise has brought over the past two years, it can only be bitter-sweet at best. At worst, it is an alarm bell ringing out a warning for the fate of Berlin's smaller clubs. Re:mise announced its closure two months ago, citing accelerated gentrification as the reason their lease could not be extended. This is not the first time Re:mise (previously Fiese Remise) has been forced to shutter up shop. While we can hope that they will be able to come through on their hopes to open new doors in the not-too-distant future, and we'll be waiting keenly for their return, it bodes poorly for the future of venues like Re:mise that host creative and innovative nightlife ventures including queer parties like Body Language, SWEAT or Fluidity. After Berlin’s nightlife has been thoroughly ravaged by COVID-19, it has become ever-harder for party collectives and nightlife entrepreneurs to find accommodating venues below the level of the big-name commercial clubs. Some relief was provided in the redesignation of nightclubs as cultural institutions, which allowed clubs certain benefits, including lower taxes to give venues some fighting chance against the overwhelming force of gentrification. It is now evident that stronger initiatives to protect Berlin's Clubkultur are needed. We need not even mention the looming specter of the A100 expansion to recognize this. There is a need for city politics to reflect the plain and palpable reality that nightlife is not only an important cornerstone of Berlin's economy; providing jobs, drawing in tourists (for better or worse), and boosting local business, but also fundamentally at the heart of this city's identity. A part of its identity closely tied to its status as a queer haven. Club culture is meaningful culture. Nightlife spaces are political spaces. And for queer folks, history shows us, this is all the more true. Losing a few small clubs each year is part of the ephemeral nature of nightlife; the rise and fall of venues are a natural part of the scene's evolution. But we have to be weary, in light of a veritable culling of clubs, whether this is not an extinction event.

  • Weekend Picks November 17-19

Where are we escaping the real world this weekend? There’s so many options. So little time. So, so little sleep this weekend. Friday 17. Nov Slime Mystery Location (join their Telegram) Slime is such a delightful queer collective, always great DJs, with a real mix of music styles. Always a cosy, caring party. Come find them in their mysterious NK location… for an adventure and a party. Lecken: Queerness is Not Yet Here ÆDEN Celebrating 8 years of Lecken: a group dedicated to putting queer and feminist values on the dancefloor. Great lineup; I think DJ Shannon and Punani will really bring some fun. 2 euro off every ticket is going to Nakba75 and Medical Aid for Palestinians. After this bash Lecken's taking a sabbatical to assess their vision for the future. Times they are a’changing after all. In the meantime, we’re going to miss you Lecken. Their dresscode: “skanks of the world unite”. You have nothing to lose but your clothes. Furiosa Lido Furiosa, the queer latinx party, is back again with our monthly blast of reggaeton, pop, latin hits, perreo to the floor and, most importantly time, Shakira. We’re getting her classics, the hits every Spanish-speaker knows word-for-word (and the rest of us enjoy mumbey bopping to). It’s a queer party but not super flinta-y, (Shakira brings out the twinks after all), great vibes all-round though. And they’ve generously provided a Spotify playlist for the party for gringues to prepare (This is a very jarring way to discover you actually only know a fraction of the Shakira oeuvre. Thank you Furiosa.) Saturday 18. Nov THE BOX: FLINTA* HOUSE NIGHT Chaußeestrasse 131 This is the spot for anyone looking for groovy, funky, disco vibes, and also a more chill and cosy option for your Saturday evening. THE BOX is giving space to some great up-and-coming FLINTA* DJs, and my bet is Jana Falcon will kill it from what I’ve seen of her work. It’s a fairly new party and the concept’s still developing, but I’m a fan of these folks. Body Language RE:MISE Body Language might well be the queer party giving the best music of the weekend. There will be no time for rest with a lineup like this. Seriously looking forward to 131bpm b2b Camilla Rae, that’ll be one to remember. Can't miss this one as it's Re:mise's closing weekend. They're bidding farewell with a bang. RIP to a space that has given so much to queer parties and nightlife. BRENN invites That Gay Creation Gestrandet Mitte If you're looking for a day party this Saturday, Brenn's got the decks open at Gestrandet Mitte from 4-22pm. Beach parties are hard to come by in November, but you can combine supporting some local queer music talent with supporting local queer artisans at the accompanying queer market by that Gay creation. Take my gay money. SUPERNATURE: Queer Soli Rave ://about blank Supernature is back with a soli party with a delightful lineup. It'll be a groovy caring space as always I'm sure. Keep your eyes peeled for Belen Zer and cristian zanotti. Supernature has a very reasonable entry price, but since they're raising funds for queer folks in Cameroon through the Working For Our Wellbeing NGO, consider being generous. Good cause. Good folks. Good times.

    Berlin's getting chilly but there's no shortage of cosy bar nights, hot drag shows, and FLINTA* flirt nights to warm you right up. @tristezakiezkneipe @monsterronsons @silverfuture_bar @pepsibostonbarberlin @schwuz @curly_bar_berlin @slightly_strange_theatre @cafecrallekollektiv @stueck_36 @so36_club @loge_kneipenkollektiv @tipsy_bear_berlin @lolitavavoom

  • Weekend Picks November 10-12

It's getting chilly, the days are getting short, and there's far too much Christmas decor about. You know where that won't be an issue? In the club. Thurs 9. Nov Unisono @crackbellmer Time for Crack Bellmer’s monthly exhibition night for upcoming and well-established flinta DJs alike. Nice project to help flinta DJs get a foothold in the Berlin club scene so worth getting out for. Bellmer’s a cute little venue so it should be a cozy night to listen to some good music from 10pm on. They’re also looking for flinta folks to step up and play next unisono night for those aspiring to make their break. Fri 10. Nov Subverted @subverted.scene @untertageclub This is where we find the hot goths, the doom-gloom-dykes, the queer industrial savants, those who straddle the boundary of cute & scary. Really nice lineup; I'm looking forward to catching @kiar_oscuro and @la.mrls. There's also a photo exhibition and BDSM performance on the roster. It’s going to be the last Subverted at Untertage so it’s not one to miss. Queer, sex-positive, intimate and friendly vibes. Sat 11. Nov Queer Garten @queer_garten @aevebyaeden The Queer Garten FLINTA* kollektiv are back again with their first party at ÆVE (just up the road from their old haunt). One floor of techno and house, one floor of 80s, indie, alternative and pop, so there’s there’s something for everyone. Always a cute party with Queer Garten. Dissident @dissident.berlin @oxi_club Not only is Dissident always a sweet party that brings out the sweetest folks, but when I say the lineup for this is good I mean it’s goddamn beautiful, and when I say it’s goddamn beautiful, I mean I am individually in love with each of the DJs. Not an explicitly queer party but very flinta vibes nonetheless.

  • Party Dyke Bar Nights Week Nov 6-12

Bar nights galore, FLINTA* Kneipenkultur is a'thriving, even in Köpenick apparently.

  • Weekend Picks November 3-5

It’s a quiet weekend for queer parties, and nothing FLINTA* specific on the books but never fear, there’s still places to dress cute and dance badly for every night of the weekend. Fri 3. Nov Gegen Mystery @gegenberlin @kitkatclub.official If you're going to dance at kitty, this is the night. Will the crowd be mostly gay men? Yes. Once you make peace with that, it’s a sick party, featuring some great FLINTA* artists and performers, and some of the best music in town this Saturday night. Keep your ears open for sonorityrainbow and @dirtydaddydon . Sat 4. Nov Lunchbox Candy: Twisted Generation @lunchboxcandy @aedenberlin Lunchbox Candy is celebrating two years of queer chaos. I foresee a colourful night of queer debauchery and general gender-messiness. Looking forward to catching @rafush___ and @shero_909 again. Dress code is weird, wonderful, queer and quirky: radical self-expresssion. Sun 5. Nov 8 years of poly|motion @polymotion @about.blank.berlin To round off the weekend, head over to blank on Sunday afternoon for poly|motions 8th birthday. Still pending an ol’ partydyke review, and their lineup isn’t announced in advance, but I have high expectations for some nice, smooth, down-pitch techno to round off the weekend, and with a FLINTA* focused area and an awareness team on task it seems like a caring and mindful space to party.
